In every bloggers life comes a special day – the day they first launch a new blog.
Now unless you went out and purchased someone else’s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader – you.
Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best mate about your new blog but that’s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.
Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.
It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called “traction”, which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is a good start) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.
Top 10 Tips
10. Write At Least Five Major Pillar Articles
A pillar article is a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice.
This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.
9. Write One New Pillar Post Per Week Minimum
You need to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time, so they feel that if they come back they will find something new. This causes them to bookmark or subscribe to your blog.
Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming, but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down your publication schedule. The first few months are important because your blog starts off empty. The more content you can produce at this time the better.
8. Use A Proper Domain Name
If you are serious about blogging be series about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need a easily rememberable domain name.
People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that’s the offline world, you remember that place right?). You need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL.
Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you’ve done a good job!).
7. Begin To Comment On Other Blogs
Once you have your pillar articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world.
One of the simplest ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people’s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.
Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific comment maker and always have something valuable to say, people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.
6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts.
A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger’s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry – it’s sort of like your blog telling someone else’s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.
This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important – it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will likely come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.
5. Encourage comments on your own blog.
One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.
4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival.
A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival often enjoy a spike in new readers.
This concept can be confusing so I suggest you take a look at the Carnival of the Cats for an example. You can also find a list of all the carnivals and submit your articles at the Carnival Submit Form.
3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com.
To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it’s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it’s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!
2. Submit your articles to other sites.
This is another tip that doesn’t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it’s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have – your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles or another directory. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.
How you benefit is through what is called your “Resource Box”. You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.
1. Write more pillar articles.
Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I’ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won’t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.
I hope you enjoyed my list of traffic tips. Everything listed above are techniques I’ve put into place myself for my blogs and have worked for me, however it’s certainly not a comprehensive list. There are many more things you can do. Finding readers is all about testing to see what works best for you and your audience and I have no doubt if you put your mind to it you will find a balance that works for you.

Nice pillar… Actually, I commented on one of Michael Pollock’s posts the other day, and I was surprised at the quick and thoughful response I got from him only a few hours later. it was the first time I had ever left a comment, and it really boosted my willingness to “participate” in “blogosphere”. Gosh I hope nobody I know reads this. Oh wait, I do. Thats why I’m posting this. Keep up the awesome work Yaro!
Yaro,
Thank you for such a wonderful article. I’ve only been on your site for less than an hour, and I have learned so much.
I have a blog at http://www.cashcampus.com/ftt which is also geared towards helping people succeed in business.
Keep up the good work!

Great article! Just signed up for your newsletter and I am looking forward to my first issue. I have also added a link to your blog at Niche Hunter.
very nice articles. regards
Good, thanks for the tips man .
I did a trackback to this article from my blog, but it does not show up here. Did the trackback end up as spam?
Good question Mr. Google Success – I will see if I can find it…
I really need to get to work on my pillar articles. I have one good series about how to format your business entity and another about the basic accounting for your company. Other than those two sets I need to really work on setting up some more!
Another great article to read Yaro. I am now inspired to update my blog more regularly than I have been doing lately. I hope to apply some of the techniques I have just learned from your article.

Hi ,Yaro
Very good article. Thanks for “Top 10 Tips”
Thanks again, Yaro
What about link exchanges…aren’t they helpful?
Thanks for your input…I guess I’ve just been spinning my wheels the past week!!!
Link exchanges are pretty worthless unfortunately.
great tips, generally most ‘blog traffic tips’ articles talk about the same thing like good content, social bokmarking, etc. this article does have a few things i havent heard before like the pillar article tip and about blogtopsites.com(which is blogflux now), i’ll probably work on this once i am done with my domain transfer, going to wordpress…
Thanks for the tips Yaro. I got a good lesson to get more traffic to my blog. Encourage people to give comments is a best tip.
Just wanted to add one of my own observations – it helps to submit articles to related forums (not only article directories). Make sure you link to your blog from the signature.
this articles is good for newbie like me. I will use your tips to make my blog have higher traffic.
This is awesome! I just started my blog about a week ago and this list really laid it out for me. I started my pillar articles maybe 3 hours ago and I have two nice ones done. Within an hour of completing them, I had two comments. I don’t even know how lol.
Thanks for all of the advice and I’ll be sure to stick around here to learn more!
Sean
Thank you for this extremely helpful article! I recently started my blog and now know how to pull in more traffic. Working on my pillars as we speak!
These are awesome tips. I write plenty of pillar articles but I don’t normally them to the article directory. Instead, I re-write the pillar articles from a different perspective before I submit to article directories.
For example, if I wrote about 5 ways to increase response, my re-written article will be 5 Blunders that decreases response.
Since search engines discount duplicate content, this can really help a lot from a SEO perspective.
Brilliant!! You have made this informative so that anyone can grasp the concept and not feel overwelmed. Not much of that out there these days.
Thank you much for that.
Carol
Hi Yaro,
Great article. I was wondering a couple of things with number 10 and how that relates to a personal blog rather than a niche blog?
I’m new to blogging and I found your article extremely helpful. The concept of pillar articles makes a lot of sense and gives me some direction (and ideas). I’ve just been putting up articles randomly, without really knowing what makes for a good blog. Thanks!
Some great stuff there.
If people really implemented this advice their blogs would be 150% more effective.
The unstated value of these top 10 blogging tips ideas is that the traffic and links that are built through comments, trackbacks, article syndication, etc will boost your blog content in the search engines.
This acts as natural promotion and what the search engines desire. This is a true way to boost your rankings and not through artificial means. The boost in rankings and the resulting traffic will be a welcome and unintended benefit.
Hey there Yaro!
I heard about your blog through Carl Ocab’s blog, which actually lead me to Alvin Phang’s Atomic Blogging Site, where I listened to your interview with him when I bought his Atomic Package!
Your beginner tips are REALLY helping me out. I personally think the best tip on that list are the pillar articles. I’ve only posted to my blog 4 times, so when I post next, I’ll try to keep in mind that i should make it a pillar article.
Anyways, you’ve got a great blog going on. I subscribed!

WOOO HOOO, 15 hits yesterday, 16 the day before.
OK Mister 5000 hits per day, I know it doesn’t sound like much, but after months and months of oneseys and twoseys, mostly from me, This is huge. Someone is really reading my blog.
Anyhow, Stay tuned, when I hit 100, I’ll be throwing a party, and you will be invited.
Excellent TIPS! I just happen to stumble upon your blog and what a fortunate circumstance! Your articles are helpful for new bloggers. My traffic is steady and averages about 60/day ~ like the previous commenter, I’m hoping to reach my first 100 employing your techniques. Thanks again!
Love this article! I have referenced back to this article I don’t know how many times. Great advice for all stages of bloggers. Sometimes you just need to get back to the basics. Thanks for helping me build my blog Yaro!
Hi, I have been visiting your site for a few months and must congratulate you on how bountiful and generous you are with your free articles.
I am not a professional Blogger but use blogging as part of my Attraction Marketing System and so the more I learn the more I can help my students, some who have good writing talents.
I will certainly be pointing them in your direction.
Your style is relaxed and very audience friendly and extremely informative.
Thank you.
Been looking through your site for a couple of days now and cant believe the amount of free stuff that is available – Being a newbie I’m still making loads of mistakes like making posts without having any pillar articles so will concentrate on those first from now on – again thanks for the insight
Every time I visit your site I find it more fascinating.
Your have so much information that you give away and you are not always pitching.
I wish you continued success and I will keep on learning from you.
Today I learnt from you how to invite incoming links to my blog as imy blog is very lonely. Almost getting a rejection complex.
Thanks you so much.
Yaro,
You rock! These tips are so obvious but such high quality. I’ve been checking Entrepreneurs-Journey every morning and I am never disappointed by the practical tips I find. Thanks Yaro!
Thanks for the tips. I just submitted my blog to blogtopsites and I will see how it goes.
At first, I thought that the only way to increase traffic is by writing best quality articles. Now, I realize that bloggers need to be active in promoting their blogs by registering their blogs in directories, writing articles in Ezinearticles and etc. Yaro, thanks for this tip. I will apply it in my blog and marketing campaign.

Thanks Yaro, i found your blog very helpful but am still having problems coming up with articles in my line of business i.e Corporate/Business Gifts, Household, Wedding Souvenirs etc.. I would really appreciate it if you can link me to blog sites where i can get inspiration on articles for this type of products on my blog. Thanks
I am pretty new to blogging but your tips have helped me to grow my traffic. My blog is called http://www.stuckserving.com, and it posts funny waiter stories every day, kind of like fmylife.com but for waiters. The most traffic I have gotten on a day was 460, and that was due to commenting on other people’s blogs. Thanks for the great help and for creating such a great blog. I really want to attain the level of success that you have some day, how much traffic do you generally find it takes to make a decent income?
Thank you for these article that you wrote for beginners. I personally will benefit from it. I have done everything you said here however, i really cannot understand blog carnivals. That’ the only one thing I guess I cannot do in this article.
Great article. Pillar articles are very important. I think I have 1 good pillar article. I need to get busy and start writing more attention grabbing pillar articles and start doing trackbacks. Never really knew how that work until now.
Thank you for sharing Yaro!
Commenting is a thing that I love to do, ’cause it allows you to interact with like-minded people and discover new things on their blogs. I have to say that I really prefer commenting than writing new posts, ’cause it feels more like a conversation 🙂
Between you and Darren, and a couple other bloggers out there I have learned so much, I appreciate all the knowledge you guys provide and hope that you all keep it up so I can keep improving my own endeavors. Thank you
Thks Yaro
This is the exact article that a new blogger needs. Your ten tips comes in handy for anyone interested in starting a blog.
This is what I’m looking for and I found that your article really give me the edge to improve my contents and increase traffic, I just download you ebook and will be reading it tonight, Thanks Yaro.
Hey, Yaro – I just completed my fourth on my latest blog! It’s my weight loss blog, but I wanted it to be useful for everyone who reads it! Mine is on how to use EFT!
Your Message
Thanks so much for this great post. I have just begun receiving your newsletter and stopped at this article because your ebook told me too. So glad I “listened’ to it.
what a nice post.
Thanks

The most important factor that i have noticed really works while building my website for celebrities all around the world: LINK building with other sites
its greatly increases your page rank.
I have a lot celebrity pictures in my site, so second thing is when you add pictures to your website you should always give them “ALT” tag so search engines would know that does your pictures describe.
It greatly affected my google search engine traffic, right now i have almost 54% traffic from search engines (famouscelebritypicture.com)
This is very interesting post for newbies to get touch of seo for their websites
GUD LUCK everybody!
Great article as usual Yaro! Your writing style is just perfect for this kind of message: simple and precise. Keep the flag flying. I have got a question though: are u sure having repeated articles on the internet (on your blog and Ezine For instance), doesn’t affect SEO? Someone already asked but their was no response.
Anyways, your stuff is always great. Learnt about you through Michael Dunlop’s list of top 50 bloggers, so I guess pillars do work! Looking 4ward to your response. Thanks
I have been trying to get the trackbacks by mass blogging on some high pr sites which will hopefully bring some traffic to my new gig which is science fair projects.
Thanks a lot for the tips. I’m just working on my first pillar articles and will soon be on track.
Hi Yaro,
This are great tips but I’m wondering if Google will penalize you if you submit one of your articles to ezine articles. Isn’t that duplicate content?
Hi friends:
I just found this article and found it helpful. I have had my art blog for just about two years. It focuses mainly on my own personal story and journey to become a professional artist. I’m not quite there yet, but I’m putting one foot in front of the other.
The issue I have is that I keep getting page visits from bogus referrers that appear legit, but when you click on them are scams. So it’s hard to get any measure of PEOPLE who are visiting versus these sites that leave breadcrumbs to their own sites that aren’t real visitors. Some of them are not nice sites at all.
I must say though that I do enjoy blogging very much. I love using it as a journal to tell my personal story. Even if I’m the only real visitor, I find it has a lot of value to me. I wish I could figure out how to increase viewership. I’m not doing a very good job on my own, but hey…you get what you pay for, right?
Still, I keep trying and hoping one day to find out that real people are starting to show up who have an interest in what I write about as well as my own oil paintings.
Thanks for this article. I have to digest it and see if I can apply some of it.
God bless,
Bob.
Hi Robert,
Google Analytics is pretty good at showing you the real visitors. If you are not using their service you should give it a go. It is free.
Yaro
Whats up this is somewhat of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use
WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
Have a look at the WordPress platform Gwendolyn and you will see that no code is required.
Yaro
Thank you for this valuable information. I just signed up with Top Blog Sites. I look forward to finding out even more tips from you.
Wow, I never heard of ‘pillar’ articles before, but this is a great concept. I need to be writing more of these. I’ve been having good luck with my regular articles, SEO, and commenting on other blogs, but pillar articles in my art niche would probably really help me stand out. Thanks for the idea. I’ve also started getting assistance with my social marketing from https://www.fiverr.com/seogig4u because I’m finding that social sharing seems to get more people to my articles than regular link building.
Great tips to increase blog traffic….I think traffic is the most important thing in blogging…Without traffic we can’t get anything from blloggin….I’ve struggle a lot for getting traffics to my blog but after following your tips i’m getting good results to my site…..Thanks a lot for sharing this great post. 🙂
Yaro Starak your post is very helpful for all bloggers… Blog Commenting is one of my preferred because I get to be taught, interact and drive great traffic all at once. It’s a bit time intense but the results are remarkable.
For a long time, I used All-in-One SEO plugin and now I use Yoast SEO and all my law firm clients to do.
I find it very useful and seo friendly to embed a slideshare deck and/ior a YouTube video to enhance and connect these other socials to my WordPress articles.
Forum Discussion is really one of promising feature for the marketing. We can easily improve our web presence with the help of Forum discussion and content quality comes first. We always try to write updated and unique content. I also agree with you that Guest posting is one of trendy feature to improve blog traffic. Every Step and features are completely useful about it.
your post is really informative.keep up the good work.
i have a question about bloging, is it good to working on multiple category blog in the start of blogging, as i am a new to blogging or to work on particular niche.
Hi Bharat – Thanks for your comment. In answer to your question, it’s best to start out with a very clear niche and keep it targeted. The reason is, if you blog about too many things on one site, you won’t appeal to anyone as your message will be lost in all the different subjects, your readers won’t be able to identify with what you’re writing or the information you’re sharing because it will be too varied.
I hope that helps.
Yaro

Hi Yaro,
These are great tips but I’m wondering if Google will penalize you if you submit one of your articles to ezine articles. Isn’t that duplicate content?
This tips are very useful. 10 days ago, I was not getting a single visitor but now I am getting 100 visitors / day on my blog.
Thank you very much for this blog. Lot of information for the beginners. This will helps me a lot to increase the traffic on my website. Keep on writing and share your knowledge for the beginners.
Thanks for this information. I’m wondering if the same techniques can apply to driving traffic to a podcast?
