I watched a video from Tyrone Shum. It was a confessional video, from the heart, where Tyrone apologised to his audience for misleading them regarding how much money he makes online.
His apology sparked some thoughts regarding internet marketers, credibility, trust, proof and a few other things, that I promptly sat down and ranted out to you in the following video.
If you’re into the internet marketing niche you will enjoy this…

Trust and Credibility are always the bone of readers’ loyalty.
Once break, people gone.
I agree with you that Internet Marketers are different, where lots of other industry won’t share how much they make and treat it as a privacy of them.
That makes Internet Marketing niche different, and perhaps more shining in the industry if you can prove your huge success.
It’s funny that “blame” is the key thing people do when they face obstacle and didn’t achieve a certain target in doing things, thus they become scared as they’re scaring themselves on how fake the industry and how much lie out there that promoting to convince them to take out their hard earn money to buy a product.
Trust and Credibility is the long run solution.
Super cool video Yaro. It really nice of you to come out speak about this trust and credibility factor. Showing Proof is really important when we claim to make money online. No matter even if it is little money, showing proof will definitely increase trust with our readers and community.
It was really courageous of Tyrone to come up with the apology video and it is really good that you came up with this video giving out more information on things that we should consider before buying a product or making perception about things.
Nice video, Tyrone is a brave chap.
Nice video Yaro,
It’s so tempting for people to exaggerate their credentials in order to get results faster, but it rarely ends up working. Honesty is always the best policy, and I truly believe that if you approach your business with ethics and honesty that yes, it may take longer to achieve success and build that income and get social proof, but it is those who will get the real results in the long-run.
Congrats to Tyrone for coming out and sparking this topic!
Jeff
This is very true. Lieing gets results in the short-term, but if you want a long-term success and income, you’re going to have to be honest. Tax men and people against deceptive advertising *will* come after you if you don’t.
It is good thing to confess for wrong thing you did, So I don’t have any problem with Tyrone.
And I personally know some bloggers who are on good position but fooling their readers by tell them wrong statics.
Ya I watched that video yesterday on Tyrone blog..it took a lot of will power Yaro for him to say that..but I commend him for that..because most people wouldn’t do that.
“Black Seo Guy “Signing Off”
Great video Yaro! I found this video very helpful. I am in the camp of
‘buying something, trying just a little, becoming frustrated and then jumping ship’
So it was nice to hear your thoughts on that issue. I certainly don’t want to become someone who is only borderline trustworthy.
Great to hear your response Yaro, I was very surprised by Tyrone’s confession but very glad he did what he did – despite feeling a little deflated by the confession.
I share all of my earnings online, and it can be difficult sometimes to be so transparent, but it absolutely holds me accountable. That’s the reason I do it, and it’s been a very powerful motivator.
Thank YOU for all your transparency !
– Devin
Thanks Yaro. I have been less than willing to open my books up to the online community mainly because I just feel it’s none of their business what I make online as it has nothing to do with my niche and it isn’t going to help make me any more money with what I am currently doing. While at some point I think someone will want to buy my site and I may change my niche or get involved in a niche which requires me to disclose more, then I would do it
I can assure you this. I easily make more than six figures a year, and I live a pretty good life and 100% of that income is money that I make online and is a direct result of the site I have built over time with a huge help from the Blog Mastermind program. If this makes me an evangelist for your program, so be it.
Blog Mastermind never directly sent me the traffic and never wrote a post or article on my site, it never marketed for me nor marketed me as a brand (unless you count an interview), it gave me the information and tools to do those things and what I did with the information, I did with it.
If anyone feels the need to see my Google analytics or other stat programs, I would publish it in a second. Then people can look at it compared to theirs and do the math and probably figure out how I live as good of a life as I do.
Tyrone is a good guy. I don’t know him personally but I read his site from time to time when I get a break. I don’t think he did anything malicious but he probably just tried to get ahead of where he was and in essence take a short cut, not sure of the merit there and I am on the fence about it, mainly because I am someone who did put in the work.
I can tell you this. If you truly work hard and get good guidance, you will not need to lie about what you make online, you will be actually more protective as the money grows, and as you know, it happens very fast once it starts happening.
I am rambling here and maybe this has changed my next post which was going to be about goal setting for 2011 (that will be moved back 1 post) and my next post here will be a review of 2010 and how it changed my life.
I think no matter what industry you are in you always have to make sure that you maintain trust and credibility. The internet is much less personal, so it may not seem as important at first, but it is always important.
Everyone has free choice of whether they buy a product or not, but when language is used in such a away that it touches humans at the emotional level practically hypnotizing them into buying, is that fair or ethical?
I see it a lot in the IM/Blogging marketplace where people use headlines that say
“Make A Minimum Of $10,000 To As Much As $35,000 Per Month, Blogging Part Time”.
or
“If you’ve ever wondered how top BLOGGERS can make $250,000 per year or more by working just a couple hours per day…”
Although one may be working “part-time” now… these headlines do not reflect truthfully on the amount of work it took to get to this very point.
And although a more accurate headline may be truthful will be as effective? Probably not.
If you look at the above copy it even BOLDS the text “working just a couple hours per day”.. to emphasize this point and anchor it as a subconscious trigger. Is this being truthful?
It is an interesting thing to ponder.
Hey Jason,
You are spot on, and as a person who uses that first headline I find it a double edged sword. The truth is that my blog does take on average two hours a day to maintain and has made me as much as $35,000 and beyond per month, however it took consistent work to get to this point. During the early days it took more than two hours to get things started and build momentum, but eventually it became easier as I built the foundations.
Marketing requires you use certain language and put your best foot forward, especially in headlines. However when I have the space to tell a longer story, like in reports and training materials, that is when you can be completely detailed about the work required across the whole process, not just the endgame we are all striving for.
Yaro,
You are right, so long as people do explain the details when given the opportunity, using headlines to capture their attention is ethical and responsible. I know from experience that in your free e-book you do dive into details regarding the work required and so this in my opinion is being responsible.
Yaro, unknown to you is the fact that I have been following you online for the last 4 or so years and one thing I can truly say, is that your have been one of the most consistent and candid online marketers I have ever come across. Your first impression was so lasting that at one point I lost your website URL and I went through hoops trying to reconnect with you and I never ceased until I found you.
Based on my own experiences, truth is king and integrity is queen. I have watched so called internet gurus rise and wane over the years and I too have been victimized by some of their empty promises and futile promotions or products. There is indeed much credibility in the saying “it pays to learn.”
I must applaud you for making a difference. It is true that no-one is perfect but It is my belief that no one should falsify their message because at some point the truth will come to the fore and in the end, what looked like success or victory in the beginning, turns out to be Pyrrhic victory.
Having said that though, Tyrone must be given credit for having the guts to come forward and make such bold confession. Hopefully, it will motivate newbies and everyone for that matter, to do their due diligence when when making any decision, not just as it relates to our online existence. In the same vein, I trust it will provoke the consciences of anyone else guilty of such practices to desist and even follow suit.
Continue to lead by example Yaro. We are proud of you!
Hello Yaro, your video is great! I was very impressed with the courage Tyrone Shum. He bravely admitted he lied. I really appreciate his honesty. not all people dare to admit. Well that is over let pass. we all must often make mistakes. that’s why we always pray for forgiveness.
Have a good week end!
Cheers
Semmy
Some awesome points in the video!… I think with social media you can see through the blaggers. Say someone claims to make $25,000 a month and they only have 100 followers on twitter.
To make that amount, they would have to establish a brand and traffic over 5 years…
Thanks Yaro!,
David Edwards
There is no correlation to social media numbers and Twitter followers to money earned.
Well you said a lot of about the facts the Internet Marketers don’t think even then how can work on the same, means we are loosing a very powerful market being a marketer online. Thanks for publishing this short and focused post because I got every word you used and like to take action upon also as you recommended to do.
Hey Yaro,
Thank you for your supportive words and it was very encouraging to watch your video. Just to clarify about what you mentioned about “where” I make my income from. I have clients who I work with “offline” where I develop their e-commerce and wordpress websites plus I also receive rental income from properties I have “offline”. Then I have income coming from promoting “affiliate’s products” which is from my blog. I hope this clarifies where I make my income from.
Also one last point I want to emphasis is this – the video I created was NOT intended as a marketing ploy or to sell any products. It was genuinely for me to express how I felt and to apologise because I felt so bad in my heart about what I had portrayed. I knew what the consequences were and I am working really hard now to build the trust and respect from everyone who had faith in me.
Thank you for everyone’s support and I’m so humbled by all your comments.
Tyrone — Forgive me but why should I believe anything you ever say again? You are a self-confessed liar. Your invoking God in your video is a disgrace to our Lord and Savior.
Well you don’t have my “support”. You can read what I think further down below in the comments.
Though on the topic of what you do from here – I think you should forget the “working really hard to build the trust and respect” again and just move into being a successful internet marketer (note that doesn’t include reselling IM products). Go out prove your worth, try a lot of things, fail a lot (but learn from your failures), get experience.
Then if you can pull that off a genuinely get to the point where you are making a living – THEN make a comeback.
Don’t try and be what you’re not. It’s never sustainable in the long run.
I sincerely do wish you all the best mate.
Yaro,
I enjoyed your video and agree with what you say here. Thanks for that. I think too often it is marketed that it is so easy to make money online and all you have to do it this or buy this and look at me, see how much money I make!
Well, like you said, you want to have some proof that you are credible, but at the same time not make light of the work you put in to get to that point. One shouldn’t make things out to be too easy just to make a sale. I think that is being dishonest and is what leads to many people becoming frustrated by false promises.
The bottom line is it takes work, just like anything else in life. For those who have made a large amount of money, yes is it important to be a credible source.
It took a lot of courage for Tyrone to do what he did, so I give him credit for that.
If people would just act with integrity… Thanks for your integrity.
Take care,
Karen
Great post Yaro,
And fair play to Tyrone, it takes a big person to admit when they are wrong and an even bigger person to do it publicly!
I hope I never have to apologize to my customers or readers but I would like to think I am big enough to be able to swallow my pride and do it!
Thanks again
Simon
It’s good to see that Tyrone has came out with the truth about the earnings he makes. I wonder going forward what the impact will be and if he is able to rebound. Hopefully more clarity also comes out as a result going forward, and sets a new trend in internet marketing 🙂
-Jean
Nice video Yaro. Trusting somebody online, whom you haven’t met before, is really hard. Right from the beginning, let your viewers/followers know that you can be trusted.
Great video. Trust is almost everything and it’s better to be up-front and honest about things than have the truth come out later anyway and land you in a mess. Kudos to Tyrone for that apology video. That was good to see.
Trust is very important and is very hard to rebuild, especially on the internet which all past and present is there permanent.
For example would people ever give money to Bernard Madoff knowing what they know now?
It is none of my business but I checked the blog owned by out ‘Tyrone’. Lets be serious for a moment. When the title of a blog is something like ‘Outsourcing & Automation For LIfestyle Business Owners’, do honestly think they are making money?
It is more like a teeny bopper having a laugh and a dance. In the world of IM, 97% of the people are wannabes, it is only the 3% that are making any sort of full time income.
The claims made by the majority are all falsehood most of which are / close to flaunting advertising laws. I have worked for many years in face to face sales and some of the stuff used are what we would call ‘misselling’.
The tiny minority who do make money do not go bragging about it. They keep their heads down and get on with it without being in the limelight. The only people who need to make a name for themselves are the blogger types who want to get a massive following. These followers are then ‘recommended’ products which then help the blogger to make money.

I’d argue that there are quite a few that are making great money and then blog about it just because they like sharing or throwing their thoughts somewhere, but ofcourse nothing begets friends faster than success and as a result they win a following because they are the real deal.
Look at a lot of top internet marketing celeb bloggers, Shoe, John Chow, ProB etc etc – they all made quite a bit of money online before they made big bucks via their IM related blogs.
It’s better to walk the talk, then preach, than to preach and hope no one asks you to walk the walk.
My God ! A internet marketer lying ! Mate … you are not the first internet marketer or the last to lie to the public. Clense your soul and give all you earnings to charity and you will feel better.
@Peter, you are right about one thing, he wont be the first to lie about it, but he will be one of the few to come out front clean with it. Most of the truth we will never know.
-Jean
Yes I also agree with you whatever you have said in your video. Really appreciate this one.
I like Tyrone because I can tell he really wants to make it even from his internet business path days.
If you want to be a leader though in anything, you need to lead and not follow. For example he models a bit too much of what he does after Yaro, and he ripped verbatim the “elite entrepreneur” page and Pat Flynns “recommended resources” page which is a huge put off for me because it shows a lack of original thought. BUT thats how everyone starts off I guess as no one is born a revolutionary at first. You copy when you don’t know what you are doing, then you start to come up with your own ideas, then you become a leader.
“BUT thats how everyone starts off I guess as no one is born a revolutionary at first. You copy when you don’t know what you are doing, then you start to come up with your own ideas, then you become a leader.”
I’d beg to differ.
Those with the qualities and values to “become a leader” start at the begin – there’s no shortcut in gaining the sort of integrity that inspire those to be willing to follow.
I’m not saying leaders can’t be human – but they definitely don’t start as snake oil salesmen and thieves.
Warning rant to follow…
“He’s friend of mine from down in Sydney; I’ve meet him a couple times; totally respect the guy; completely trustworthy; have no issues with him whatsoever. I have interviewed him on my site, he has given some great information on outsourcing and is an all round a good internet marketer and good guy!”
Seriously Yaro, what the…?
I sincerely hope you don’t respect him. I went through a bit of his content and watched some of his videos and I must admit there is not a lot to “respect”.
How can you say he’s trustworthy? He’s clearly not. He is a desperate, insecure wannabe at best, that as far as I can tell he just regurgitates content of other experts and doesn’t even offer intelligent insight, and if anything only misleads with his partial understanding of basic internet marketing concepts.
In regards to your interview with him, if the content of that interview is like the content of his site then I’d recommend future listeners to take it with a massive grain of salt or just avoid it all together.
I have 3 permanent offshore employees and have been making a full time living from the internet for the last 5 years (unlike this bloke) and he is spruiking some serious misinformation. I even cringed at some of the suggestions he was making, thinking to myself, “man I hope people weren’t listening to that part – that’s completely misinformed”. Of course you only need to read the comments below to see people not only believe him but thought he was the best things since sliced bread (“The Emperor’s New Clothes” anyone?)
Yaro, YOUR reputation is worth more than associating with this guy.
Don’t give credit where credit isn’t due. Sure, I tip my hat to the bloke for coming clean, takes guts, most wouldn’t, but that doesn’t make all of a sudden worth listening to.
The guy is a misinformed joker, and until you work out what the guy REALLY knows, and what he has genuine experience in, I’d just assume everything he says is worthless and definitely wouldn’t be plugging him as “good internet marketer and all round good guy”.
On the topic of his internet marketing skills – if he ain’t making a living from it – he ain’t “good” – end of story.
Let’s be honest, the rules of the Internet Marketing game are simple – that doesn’t mean the game is easy. You don’t see people taking advice from fat personal trainers just because they KNOW how to lose weight, because the “how to” lose weight is pretty simple – it’s just not easy. The battle is always in the mind, not the strategy, therefore if the trainer hasn’t learnt to transfer the knowledge to action and success then they have nothing to teach (not that I need to preach this to you of course). Same goes in the internet marketing game.
(On a side note about fitness – I read your post about your struggle with gaining weight, just wanted to share that at 18, I was a only 62kg and 6″4 (obviously self conscious about my (lack of) size) but through a bit of knowledge and a bit of hard work in the gym managed to bulked up and now regularly sit between 80kg – 85kg. So it’s very possible for us hard gainers who sit over laptops all day to size up.
Also, I live in Brisbane as well, so if you ever need a gym buddy that can hold you to account and help give you some been there done that sort of hardgainer advice) give me a bell. That said at the end of the day building size is a bit like how you have built your blog, the strategy is once again quite simple – it’s just not easy. Think, quality content, some SEO, good email marketing, relationship building, JV etc equates to quality diet, some supplements, good training program and gym buddies etc, but the most important variable when it comes to building a blog or building a body is a “sustained” effort.
Anyway, back to my rant…
: ))
Yaro mate, you talk about trust and credibility being important, and I just hate seeing you attach your name to a bloke who clearly at best is capable of regurgitating content of other intelligent experts (and actually successful online entrepreneurs) to try and steal his little slice of the pie instead of going out there and creating something of value for someone.
Finally to, Tyrone if you ever read this mate – do yourself a favour and stop trying to be the next “get rich quick internet marketing guru” you’re not them – you’re Tyrone – that guy who has a hard work attitude is willing to learn about IM, but needs to apply these skills in niches that he is passionate about or possesses valuable knowledge in. (PS – I admire your passion for video – but at least script that stuff – your ad lib is terrible. On the flip side if you are reading the regular style of persuasive sales copy at least practice faking authenticity and practice the script to the point until it flows. The NLP of sales copy isn’t nearly as effective if you stutter and stumble over your words).
Also Tyrone, those that are successful in the internet marketing niche often didn’t find their success in that niche first, and in many cases are still active in non “internet marketing” related niches. Find your success in an niche you can add value to, because if you provide value and understand even the basics of internet marketing you’ll make money. Then in a few years time when your business truly is automated (and let’s be honest it’s never TRULY hands off) and you are only working a couple of hours you’ll have all the time in the world to blog about all your experiences and you won’t be doing it just to make money – you’ll be doing because you want to connect with the community and when people see that coupled with your experience, knowledge, systems and past successes you won’t have any problem building a following who will follow your every advice (even if it involves clicking an affiliate link).
; )
I’m not a Christian (agnostic at best), but even I know serving others first will get you where you really want to go (and I ain’t talking about heaven). I’m pretty sure Jesus had something to say about that as well…
; )
Finally, Tyrone (or anyone else chasing the internet marketing path to riches), I’ll leave you with a video that spells it all out for you in 3 minutes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vldjedAashA
Best of luck mate.
PS. Thank your fiancé for trying to make an honest man of ya. I may not be at the stage of my life where I want to be marriage yet (I’m 25) but I sure hope the woman I marry is as committed to making sure I don’t let myself down as your future wife is.
thank you for the video Yaro 🙂 keep it up
Great video Yaro! That’s just how we are as human beings. We are skeptical with things currently out of our reach. I was very skeptical when I first started learning about IM. I wasn’t sure what this is all about and how it will benefit me. I’m glad that I kept learning and still do now.
Hi..i checked your video. I easily make more than six figures a year, and I live a pretty good life and 100% of that income is money that I make online and is a direct result of the site I have built over time with a huge help from the Blog Mastermind program. If this makes me an evangelist for your program, so be it.

LOL are you American Yaro? I have only ever READ your blog (I never had good internet so I couldn’t watch the videos..) this is the first I’m watched and I’m realizing that this great Aussie marketer is actually American or Canadian haha! Cool
I’m a born and bred Aussie but my parents have Canadian accents and handed one down to me, despite growing up in Brisbane.
None of us are born in Canada though, which makes my accent a bit of an anomaly.
Nice video, thanks for sharing Yaro.
Very interesting stuff from Tyrone.
Yaro,
I have been reading your blog and watching your videos with great interest because I desire to begin a blogging business. I have not committed to your membership site as of yet but I have found your approach and personality both compelling and authentic.
I do believe however, that you made a significant tactical error in the point of view you chose regarding your video on Tyrone. I won’t restate many of the excellent points made by Chris on Dec. 25th but I do want to emphasis the following.
Integrity is an essential quality when making claims and offers in the very dynamic and unregulated realm of internet marketing. False claims and misrepresentation amounts to fraud and reflects badly on the industry as a whole. It amounts to stealing because money is being given in exchange for information of little or no value. And its astounding that he goes immediately from confession to judging and condemning others in his business who are likewise dishonest but haven’t come clean. He should just stick to his own situation and continue on the path of seeking forgiveness and paying his restitution.
By taking such a weak position you do yourself and your fellow “trustworthy” internet brotherhood a huge disservice. You would have been much better served ignoring the issue than to have taken this chosen perspective. The fact that you side step the serious implications of Tyrone’s dishonesty and launch into the power of redemption as a powerful marketing story, quite frankly puts you in a very unfavorably light. It conjures up many questions of ploys, manipulations and schemes designed to lure unsuspecting but trusting potential members to signup for services that are based on falsehoods- which comes across as be considered as no big deal by the inner circle. It’s just a little mistake that goes away with a simple apology, a reference to finding the lord and a condemnation of others who may be lying to their paying customers.
I for one have felt a positive energy and connection to your message and delivery- up until this particular video. I think you offer value in your products and have integrity. I am just disappointed in the manner in which you handed this important opportunity to take a more courageous stand. I realize that the internet marketing community is a small tight knit group at the top and that your first instincts are to stick together.
Loyalty, friendship and support are admirably qualities. In this particular case, I think you misread the serious implications of Tyrone’s dishonest business practices and failed to leverage it into a learning experience that could have elevated you and your fellow honest practitioners. Instead it casts the entire internet marketing community under suspicion.
I hope you take the time to reflect on the feedback from “both” sides of this issue and grow from the experience. You have a great deal of valuable knowledge, insights and strategies to share.
Happy New Year’s and continued prosperity,
I was pretty surprised by his confession and wonder how many other gurus come and go, lie, and never admit that they lied. I admire him for admitting that he did lie but his credibility is shot and he should have a tough time selling anything in the future.
Really, I think that people should start being their own best examples and stop following others. There’s really no substitute for hard work, honesty, experience and a good value for the buck. I pride myself on providing that to my clients and the recommendations just keep on coming. You don’t need to boast about what you make, as it’s really no ones business. I thank God for my success and the person that I am, valuing ethics and hard work.
Mrs. D.
Yaro. I want to thank you for such an amazing video. It’s an important topic and you did a great job covering it, but the way you covered it was powerful. I get a sense that your a good guy. 🙂 I sent you an email about a possible partnership. Hope to hear from you. Chris Hughes

Wow. He really is a fraud in a lot of respects. Lying about his online income and the amount of hours he works per week, which are both the biggest selling points of his product, leaves little left to talk about. Even though he came clean about these lies, I don’t know why anyone would follow him anymore.
Side note: Why did he have to bring God into the video? What does God have to do with him lying? I will refrain from writing how I really feel about this topic.
Trust and credibility are vital in any online niche. But aside from personal experience with a product or person, how can we possibly know whether a person is being honest or not from our computer screens? It takes time to build trust online, but with positive feedback a person can definitely be trusted.
