What I Did When I First Started My Blog
When I wrote the original Blog Profits Blueprint in 2007 I had just started my third year of blogging. I had grown my income to $10,000 per month, and had about 2,000 people a day visiting my blog.
Everything I did to grow my traffic and make money was fresh in my mind. It was the perfect time to write the Blueprint because I knew exactly what it was like to start from zero. I was ready to pass on my knowledge and help other people begin blogs designed to make money.
Over a period of one month I sat down every single day at my favorite local cafe in Brisbane, Australia (where I was born and grew up) and wrote a section of the Blueprint. It took the entire month, but in the end I had written a 55-page report, ready for the world to download.

I liked the book alot.
Lots of information clearly presented. And a fairly easy and readable style. Also free of the usual typo’s due to spell checkers which can’t distinguish words that are correctly spelt but incorrectly used. So either you are good at proof-reading or you got a real human to do it.
I’m still just starting out and so the only the earlier suggestions were relevant to me. It’ll be a while before advertisers are approaching me.
These suggestions gave me specific things to do which I am implementing. The suggestions were clear and do-able, not just hype but specific behaviours.
One improvement perhaps. Larger headings with sub-headings underneath, at least for the contents page.

I read through most of the blueprint. I didn’t finish it yet because I realized I started off blogging on the wrong foot. On my blog (http://jivefood.com) I feel like I was too concern with the quantity of articles rather then quality. I also realize it really isn’t focused enough on one main topic.
Reading your blueprint makes me want to start all over with my blog or delete the posts that I don’t feel are of good quality. What do you think I should do, start over or remover poor content?

Great Report! I have been blogging for sometime now, even put up blogs with PLR content and so on. I have blog where I answer the questions received from my subscribers. But I have never gone beyond Google AdSense.
You have given great practical tips, which you yourself has used, minus hype and fluff. Whenever I read reports with great content I think of Rich Schefren and when I read the part that he is your mentor, I thought it could be none other.
I completely agree with you about pillar content and making people come back to you for more etc. But I have two questions for you:
1. The competition to give free stuff is so fierce now-a-days that it costs you to give away free stuff.
By the time my free report reaches someone, they have already been offered four free videos, six free reports some of which can earn them $0.5 to give it away.
How do you make your free content get through to the person and make such an impression that is deeper than the others?
2. I have not succeeded much in selling affiliate products. Or may be my list is busy downloading all the free stuff that they have no time, intention or money to buy anything. A new blogger would also find it difficult to get sponsors to review products, etc. without a good PageRank and Alexa ranking. Do you think the new blogger would be willing to spend two years (or more) just producing and giving away great content in the hope of monetizing the blog at a later stage?

I never could get the videos to play. This was frustrating. Maybe you should consider a different download format. I never have problems viewing videos, and did not want to take the time to figure out what was wrong. So, that was frustrating.
I like the charts. I have followed you for about 6 months now Yaro, so I have seen you progress. My only comment would be that you are less accessible than 6 months ago. You actually were pretty good about returning email back then.
But you seem to be chasing the buck and pushing products more these days. Guess it comes with the success, and having less time. It is good to see people succeed, but also is a shame to lose that personal interaction.

Go with WordPress on your own domain for your blog as soon as you can afford it and get it set-up. That’s a no-brainer decision.
digitalnomad – I’m not sure why you are having issues with the videos. I’ve got them on a special video serving server so they should work. Maybe you were just having net connection issues at the time, so keep trying.
Rangoo – yes you are right, there is a lot of free content already out there. Unless you have credibility and friends who can help you by lending their credibility (like Darren did for me), it can be difficult to get people to read your free report even if it is brilliant.
What you need to do is write the best free report you can and work on building peer relationships so when you do release it you have lots of people to help you spread the word.

The spirit of all the stuff (the blueprint, newsletters, posts, the whole box and dice) is irrepressible.There’s a quality to it that powerfully states that you right on your purpose. I can’t imagine how you are going to limit the mentoring program. I would start thinking of a contingency right now for handling all the people who don’t get it.
The blueprint is very good, it is the model for anyone thinking of a similar exercise the links and screenshots of the videos make it very rich indeed. My favourite part was the link to your business timeline, that was a powerful rapport building tactic.

Thank you for such a clear and comprehensive explanation of blogging and how to attract traffic. It’s the first useful bit of information I’ve found on the internet. Most of the stuff out there is misleading – ie you can make money so easily and so quickly – or requires you to buy a few ebooks before you can find out what to do. I’ve realised my two blogs are not focused enough, so I am working on fine tuning them. I’m really glad you explained about the need for piller content, so that is my next project. And you’ve been very honest in saying that it will take time and hard work in the beginning.
So thanks for your generosity in setting out the process of blogging for those of us who don’t want to buy trillions of ebooks, only to discover that the content is poor or misleading.
By the way, I am a blind computer user and had some difficulty getting your blueprint as you didn’t have an audible link for the graphical image. What did work well for leaving this comment was your maths question. Is it possible to have something like that when accessing your downloads?

After watching the video that the e-book linked to I joined the text-link-ads and reviewme sites hoping that they might raise a little revenue for my site but I have to say that so far they’ve been useless in the extreme. If I had a small site I could understand it but we have over 9,000 members and have had over 20 million hits in the two years its been going – and I easily pull in 10,000 reads for my pillar articles so in theory I should be able to at least cover my server costs through advertising – which is all I’m looking to do, but even though I’ve already done much of what the article suggests which means my traffic is always pretty reasonable, all I’ve had is one link from text-link-ads. Most reviews from the reviewme site pay out $5 a time, which I wouldn’t entertain at all, so while the article is wonderfully optimistic and very well written, I’m inclined to think that it might be over-egging the pudding so to speak. I’ll keep following the advice for a little while longer but I am more than a little sceptical based on my experience so far. Those two sites sound great on the video – but selling one link at a profit of $7.50 isn’t a great reflection of the faith you put in them, I wonder if your faith in them might be slightly misplaced.

A great report – I actually posted a review on my blog and sent it out to my list with links back to your optin page. It was clear, easy to read, straightforward, fluff free and value packed. What would have been good, for me as a new bloggger, would have been a section that compared the main blogging systems – e.g. WordPress vs Blogger vs 1 or 2 other top systems – the relative merits of each and some pointers as to how to maximise the facilities provided by each.
Most new bloggers (myself included) probably won’t have their own blog running on their own site so will be looking for the system that best meets their needs or expertise level.

I have to say, I am so glad I digested this. It is really quite good and you sounded very professional. I learned a lot, it refreshed some old ideas and the information comes obviously from a professional.
It is a great guide for beginners and however you did it, it made me want to sign up for the mastermind program.
I would have liked to see more on blogging for business and branding (Future series?) rather than making affiliate revenue.

Ruby – If you right click the MP3 file you can do a “save as” or “save target” to save the file to your computer. If you left click it like normal, it will stream the file if you have your computer set up to work like that.
That’s a great resource Yaro. I already have a reasonably successful blog at http://mattstone.blogs.com, which has made it into the top 100 Aussie websites, but I’ve only just started to consider monitization options.
One of my concerns about monitization has been about the crassness of Adsense. You’ve opened up many new avenues for me to consider. And I think I’ll start chasing a few of those ‘rivers’!

AMAZING! Yaro, I printed off your eBook yesterday (not something that I usually take the time to do because it wastes so much ink) but I wanted to be able to take notes as I read it. Boy am I glad I did! Yaro- Bless you, I just wish I had found this 9 months ago. Instead I read anouther book that recomended multiple Blogs, way more than I actually ended up with, which is still to many. Yaro, I found your ebook enormously helpful. When authors give a free book, it is so often a bottom level funnel product, and while interesting doesn’t tell me much. Of course it’s not meant to because I’m supposed to get the real details in the paid product that follows. But your book was full of excellent material. I actually would have paid quite a bit for it. I also really felt it should be published hard copy. In September last year whwen I first caught on to blogging and hadn’t yet come across you, I went to all the major bookstores in Victoria and none of them had a book on blogging. I had actually been looking for Andy Wibbels BlogWild at the time. I’ve been telling lots of people about Blueprint and wrote some glowing words in Flying Solo this week in response to Melissa Norfolk’s article on blogging. the ebook was really helpful! Some of the things confirmed what I’ve read on Darren’s Blog and also some other blogs. But what I like was that everything was in one place now, one ebook. It gives a sense of which things to prioritize.
As a starting blogger, when reading 20 different posts, you would think all the 20 posts have the same top priority. In your ebook, I got a sense of what works and what doesn’t.
And 3 things that stuck with me were:
1. Consistency is key
2. You need pillar posts to keep the people on your site
3. Monetization isn’t proportional to the amount of posts you write that week

Promoting as you do has not been my natural style. But I suppose it can be learned and realize it sometimes takes being a promoter to make an impact. So, I will see where the blogging road goes…

Great book. It was too easy dude. You took the obvious and pulled it together into a simple, easy to follow instruction set. Well, obvious may be the wrong word. We knew we should have been doing this stuff and just refused to. Now we can see that it really is the right stuff to be doing.

Scanned it and it looks pretty decent; covers the bases. I agree though that it spent too much time on fairly obvious stuff and not enough time on new stuff. I felt I had to work hard to sift through stuff I knew to find a couple of points that I didn’t.
Your course sounds interesting, but it needs to be broken up into modules sold separately. For those of us who already have a blog, a theme, and are fairly far along developing a brand, the first part sounds like it wouldn’t be useful. Might like to take the second part though, when I am a little more stable.

Sometimes I had a good idea but thought that this would be too stupid or boring or… for the people and then later i saw it at the internet and wondered.
I am also building other sites with new ideas but i still have to make them public in wide range that real money comes back. Then i see very simple sites and hear from the people hom much money they made and make still with it on with simple sites – so i can only say – it doesn’t play a role how it looks like… just have THE category the people are searching for at google or the niche. Its very bizarre. So I must now learn to think in another easy way but i am still wondering 😉 about (i wanted to study physics, but had to work same time so i had to stop studying). I got your Blog Profits Blueprint a month ago and read it straight away. I was totally blown off my feet! Here’s how it has motivated my efforts:
I’ve spent the last month doing (had I known all this stuff) what I should have done 9 months ago! I already had a couple of blogs but wasn’t doing much with them – they were attached to self-hosted websites where I was writing lots of articles (didn’t know then that they would turn out to be my pillar articles!). My problem was I wasn’t building enough links and so never got a PR for the blogs – the website homepage got it!
After reading your book, I realised that to boost the PR of a website (with a blog attached) and give a good PR to the blog as well meant either doubling the work (article submissions and getting back-links)… or make the homepage of the site the actual blog. Two birds with one stone!
I was stuck with my main blog (The Honest Way) as a separate page to the site because it was already established with a steady and growing readership and was already registered with PayPerPost and a few others, so I couldn’t mess with the URL.
So I decided to experiment with my other blogs of various ages, from a 4 month old one right up to three blogs I started after reading your book. I moved them to the homepage URL of their respective sites and started writing for them like my life depended on it!
My experiment is a month old now – and my new blogs are already building decent readerships. My established blog is building too. I’m hoping to qualify for a half decent PR with that one thanks to a lot of promo work and obtaining back-links.
I’m convinced the advertisers will come when I can show them a viable medium in at least one of my blogs – and more as the others mature.
So a big, big thank you for sharing your knowledge – it made a huge difference here!

I read the blog profits blueprint. I found the amount of information provided to be very useful. Most of it seemed to be common to other sources I have read.
I did take great assurance in it. I am currently following all the steps listed for one of my sites. Given it has only been live for a short while, I am already making about $200 a month. I do look forward to a time when I can take a breather and make at least $1000 a month then I will be happy 🙂

I finally completed reading the BluePrint. It was very informative. The reason it took so long to complete, be newbeebbie, I went to eack one of you links, listes in the Blueprine. While it took me some time to complete, The information was well worth the time I sent.
Really terrific, easy to follow information. What I like about it is your focus on quality content and hard consistent work.
All I can say is “Thank You, so much.” I just started this stuff about two weeks ago before realizing that I had no idea how to make blogs work. I was searching for information for two days before stumbling, luckily, on your report. Everybody else was talking about adwords and keyword advertising, etc. I couldn’t get the lowdown on blogging for affiliates–or, in general.
Being eager, I listened to the mp3 first. (Great idea, by the way) Am now in the second reading of your pdf.

I just finished reading the e-book. It actually took me about 24 hours, because of all the interruptions I had with the kids, etc. Plus, I wanted to actually “get” what it was saying down to my core, and not just understand it. I want it to be a part of who I am as a blogger–it was that good!
There was a lot of great nuggets of info in there, such as why people fail…that was cool! I found that I was doing those exact things, and I got why I was failing. Thank you so much for those!

You see, I’ve just completed the basics of setting up my first Blog at age 69 & have been finding the ongoing intricacies of advertising, marketing etc difficult to sort out. One of my greatest drawbacks is not having grown up in the high tech. era. I’m rather a novice when it comes to computers, so programs often expect me to know how to do things about which I haven’t a clue (eg upload to my server).

Great article….a lot of information for a beginner but I think the most important part of the entire thing was only a couple of sentences and that is to be successful you MUST take action.

Got my copy two days ago, printed it out & read it cover to cover. Got to say this is the best & most succinct guide I have seen about blog monetisation. So many ideas! But the starting point – what to blog about in the first place – is one that I continue to struggle with (my most current effort is linked above). I guess 2 or 3 blogs would be my absolute limit, but just one will do for starters.

I think I have a great start on writing my pillar content, and have become acclimated with blogger.com, which I plan on using (unless you have a better suggestion?).
Do you have any advice and/or suggestions for creating a great layout or template design in blogger? I have a very minimal understanding of html (basically, I can copy and paste code), but would like my theme to be unique.
I would appreciate any help you could provide on this.

Yaro I’m only on page 16 of the Blueprints and I had to tell you immediately how much I appreciate you. I have done a lot of research and have countless free ebooks saved to my desktop. I’m no expert to say whose product is better but content aside, I’m more inclined to listen to you because your sincerity and passion are so prevalent in EVERY sentence. I realised afterward it wasn’t because of the information but more for the fact I was trying to get started in something I had no passion about.
I have a martial arts club – something I do have a passion about – and have decided to get back online blogging as a way of getting more clients. Do you think your mastermind would be a good fit for such a site?

A blog is brilliant at getting clients to a local business like a martial arts club.
It could also be used to sell digital versions of your martial arts training. You could record classes and sell them online.
